Pete Weber Leads After Qualifying at 2024 PBA Senior U.S. Open
Greeley, Colorado – Pete Weber has climbed his way to the top spot at the 2024 PBA Senior U.S. Open. He posted the highest block for the C-squad with games of 242, 214, 170, 216, 276 and 230 for 1,348 on Saturday morning. That moved him from fifth place to first with an 18-game qualifying total of 3,972 (+372).
Weber felt like his whole squad struggled, yet he was able to keep his ball in the play area and he took advantage of the pairs he could strike on.
“I feel like I have thrown the ball really good for all three days,” Weber said. “We still have 24 games left and that is a lot of games. As long as I stay focused on what I am doing then I should be fine.”
This has been the best Weber has bowled so far this season, after not making the cut at the first three tournaments of the season. He did earn super senior checks, but now he thinks this is a new half of bowling for him. After the 2024 PBA50 The Villages Classic May 5-9, he felt something was wrong with him, so he went to the doctor.
“I had some chest X-rays and other tests done and it came up as COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease). I actually now feel really good,” Weber said. “There is something I have to prove to myself, that I still know how to bowl.”
Round 2 qualifying leader Tom Hess is three pins back of Weber at 3,969. Tony Lanning, who led qualifying after day one, is closely behind at 3,965. John Janawicz averaged 231 on Saturday to move into fourth place at 3,939 and in fifth place is John Marsala at 3,913. The cut number was Chris Warren at +63.
The top 24 players will bowl 12 games of round-robin match-play on Sunday and 12 more games on Monday to determine the top five for the stepladder finals. Thirty bonus pins will be rewarded for each win. Round one and three of match-play begins at noon Eastern each day with round two and four scheduled to start at 5 p.m. ET both days.
