Tom Hess Leads on Day Two at 2024 PBA Senior U.S. Open
Greeley, Colorado – The highest-scoring six-game block so far at the 2024 PBA Senior U.S. Open was achieved by Tom Hess on Friday morning to move into first place overall. He shot 202, 266, 224, 261, 264 and 232 for 1,404, a 234 average. Combined with his first day total, he is at +295 holding a 3-pin lead over day one qualifying leader Tony Lanning at +292. They are followed by lefty John Marsala, who led the A-squad with 1,379. Tom Adcock is in fourth, and Pete Weber is in fifth place.
“Ball speed was key today; I couldn’t overthrow it. Trying to stay slow was a good thing, maybe feeling a little tired today helped,” Hess said. “It was a solid block and I stayed patient. I struck out games one, two and three and I doubled in the 10th the fifth and sixth game. That really helps your numbers go up.”
Looking back at his block, Hess never had a clean game, missed just one makeable a 2-8, and yet was able to go +204 on the day. He is the only bowler without a game under 200. Hess won the 2022 PBA50 Highland Park Lanes Open, and he finished in fifth place at last year’s Senior U.S. Open in this same location. He wants to continue to build off that previous success.
Watching how Lanning played the lanes on the double burn Thursday versus how he played the lanes on the burn Friday, Hess expects he won’t have to play the lanes too drastically different when he and the rest of the B-squad compete on the double burn Saturday evening.
“The C-squad is the strongest squad with most of the best bowlers, they are probably all going to do the right thing to start, so hopefully they don’t get too bad by the time I have to take the lanes,” Hess said.
The C-squad will be on the lanes first at 11 a.m. Eastern on Saturday followed by the A-squad at 2:30 p.m. and the B-squad starting at 6 p.m. ET. At the end of qualifying, the top 24 will advance to match play on Sunday with all pins carrying over. The cut number is +92 after day two. Watch the conclusion of qualifying only on BowlTV.
