Flang's First Fling
"After more than 200 PBA tournaments, I finally made it."
The speaker was tall, lanky, Sam Flanagan of Parkersburg, W.Va., who had just wrapped up his first Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) national title ever . . . the $50,000 Sacramento Open.
He clinched his title after wresting the lead from hometown favorite Palmer Fallgren with only 12 games remaining in the tournament.
Flanagan was second to Carmen Salvino, Chicago, Ill., after 18 games of qualifying, trailing Salvino by only 29 pins. But it was Fallgren, also bidding for his first PBA title, who made a rush to the top during the head-to-head match game competition. In fact, he led the field by 106 pins going into Monday's final 16 games.
