Don Johnson Pours Earl

For Earl Anthony, lefthander out of Tacoma, appearing on the nationally-televised finals was old hat, but when the smoke of battle hadcleared, Don Johnson, Akron, was the winner of the $6,000 first-place check in the $45,000 New Orleans Open.

Anthony led the semi-finals and went into the TV show for the fourth time in a dozen weeks, quite a feat for a fellow who hadn't been out on the tour in almost seven years. Johnson, who was to make bigger news one week later, had an 11-4-1 record in match play, compared to Earl's 11-5 mark. It figured that their confrontation for the title had to be close. And close it was, with Johnson taking a two-pin decision, 216-214 at Pelican Lanes.

The finals began with Jack Biondolillo topping Mike McGrath, 217-205, and then losing to Butch Gearhart, 227-193. Enter Johnson with a 206-174 triumph over Gearhart, which set the stage for the showdown with Anthony, who can look back on a second frame split and blame it for his defeat.
