Meyer Snaps Slump At Boston
Lefthander Johnny Meyer dumped a two-year slump when he recorded his second PBA championship in the Boston Open.
Mired in the doldrums since a sparkling victory in the Houston Open in 1963, Meyer was his old self as he hung up a 116-pin win over second-place Jerry McCoy. Meyer's 9117 total included 500 bonus pins he received for winning 10 of his 16 matches in the finals.
A pall of sadness hung over the tournament site after the first day when Hall of Famer Steve Nagy suffered a stroke and was removed to a Brockton Hospital in a coma.
Harry Smith made the round of 16 for the tenth straight time but was forced to withdraw from the finals with a bad back.
