Tountas Tips Waukegan Scales
A five-pin nose blow and doughty Jim St. John of San Jose, Calif. lost a chance at his second Professional Bowlers Association tournament of the year as Pete Tountas of Hammond, Ind. came through in the $27,500 Waukegan Open.
Tountas, who was born in Athens, Greece totalled 9161 over the 40-game route. This included 650 bonus pins for winning 13 of his 16 matches in the finals. Jack Biondolillo wound up second with 9152 and St. John was third at 9123.
But St. John could have taken it all if he had had a nine-pin count on his third ball in the 10th frame. This would have enabled him to win the game and add the 50 bonus pins to his total.
