Simonsen Earns Top Seed, Star-Studded Finals Set in Go Bowling U.S. Open
Anthony Simonsen, Patrick Dombrowski, Chris Via, Tim Foy Jr. and Andrew Anderson have advanced to the championship round of the Go Bowling U.S. Open.
The finals will air Sunday, March 8 at 4 p.m. ET on The CW from Royal Pin Woodland in Indianapolis.
Simonsen earned the No. 1 seed for the stepladder finals, making his fifth consecutive U.S. Open championship round at Woodland. He won the 2022 title, then finished fourth, second and fifth in each of the past three years, respectively.
Moreove,r Simonsen did not compete in the 2021 event after making the finals in 2019 and 2020, so this is his seventh consecutive finals appearance in U.S. Open tournaments in which he has competed.
Dating back to his debut in 2015, Simonsen has made the U.S. Open finals eight times in 11 appearances.
“This is the event that I look forward to,” Simonsen said. “Generally speaking, the scores are a little bit lower. Even if there's a pattern where you can get them, if you're not lined up, it's going to definitely show. Obviously, it helps that we've bowled (at Woodland) the last few years. I've got a pretty good understanding of what my ball likes to do in this place, and that definitely helps make it a little bit easier to get through the week here.”
Simonsen entered the 56th and final game of qualifying — the position round of match play — trailing Dombrowski by 16 pins for the top seed. The Woodland connoisseur navigated the pair of lanes brilliantly to emerge with the top seed.
“It's always important,” Simonsen said of earning the No. 1 seed. “Who doesn't like making guaranteed money and only having to bowl one game for the title?”
Dombrowski hung on to the No. 2 seed by two pins over Via. Dombrowski finished runner-up to DeeRonn Booker in the 2024 USBC Masters.
Via, who won the 2021 U.S. Open earned the No. 3 seed for the second straight year.. He lost to EJ Tackett in the semifinal match a year ago.
“I bowled a really good game, the first game, on TV last year, then I just kind of started forcing it,” Via said. “I was bowling against EJ, and I just felt like I had to bowl a big game. I felt like I tried to bowl 260, rather than throw some shots and see what happens. My goal this year is to make good shots and let it happen.”
Foy will be making his third career major championship round appearance, after making the PBA World Championship and PBA Players Championship finals last season. Foy made six shows and finished fifth on the tour last season in points, but is still seeking his first career PBA Tour title.
“I made two majors last year, and I bowled well on both, so I've gotten very comfortable on TV,” Foy said. “Hopefully I can take some momentum from last year, some of those experiences that I had and learned from, and let's be honest, to win you have to get a couple breaks.”
The final berth in the finals, ultimately, came down to Anderson and Tun Hakim.
However five more players were within 90 pins of fifth place entering the position round. Among the contenders was Jason Belmonte, who trailed fifth place by 234 pins with four games to go and had moved with 32 pins.
Anderson and Hakim distance themselves from the pack as the game wore on. Anderson stepped up in the 10th frame needing a mark to shut out Hakim. He left a 2-8-10 split and an open frame.
Hakim then needed two strikes and eight pins to seize his first major championship finals appearance.
“I saw Tun double the 10th to beat me the game before. I thought for sure he'd do it again,” Anderson said.
Hakim, who won the PBA Chameleon Championship last season, struck on his first shot. But he came up light and left the 2-5 on the second.
Anderson escaped with a 221-214 match win to make his second straight U.S. Open finals appearance. He led the 2025 event nearly wire to wire before falling to Tackett in the title match.
He said last year’s runner-up finish has lingered “a lot" in his mind.
“I wish it didn't, but it's hard not to,” Anderson said. “We want to win majors. But losing that turned into two more titles last year [both wins over Tackett.] Maybe it was a blessing in disguise. I believe everything happens for a reason. Here we are, with new life and a new opportunity. Thirty-six hours ago, I was about 200 pins outside of the cut, and now I'm on the show. That's all you can ask for."
The Go Bowling U.S. Open finals will air Sunday, March 8 at 4 p.m. ET on The CW from Royal Pin Woodland in Indianapolis.
