Woodbridge, Virginia – John Janawicz has been on another level during the 18 games of qualifying in the 2025 Bud Moore PBA50 Players Championship. The defending champion averaged 238.67 on Monday to finish at +835. His high game on the day was 289 and he has yet to bowl a game under 200.

His mind is always at work on and off the lanes preparing himself for competition and trying to fill gaps in his arsenal based on what he thinks he may need depending on the conditions in front of him. The last time he checked his vehicle, he estimates there are 63 bowling balls inside ready to be used at any moment.

“I had to do a lot of mold changes right before I left and I didn’t get a chance to throw a lot of these balls. I felt like I needed to take everything to know what feels good, what still has life in it and what is dead. A couple of the balls were left over from a while back,” he said. “I have already eliminated about 12 balls. It gets a little overloaded at times, but I deal with it.”

As Janawicz prepares for plan A, B and C when it comes to round-robin match play beginning on Tuesday, he expects the lanes to break down faster and a little more parallel. He knows it will be important to get off to a strong start in the head-to-head format as there is a lot of bowling yet to come. He has a 173-pin lead over second place.

“When you are dealing with 30 bonus pins and some of the best bowlers in the world out here, those leads can evaporate very quickly, if you are going in the wrong direction. I have to stay on top of it at all times,” he said. “Hopefully I will be on top of it after 24 more games. Hopefully make more good decisions, good shot making and see how the pins fall from there. The job is still at hand. There are still three more long blocks ahead.”

Amleto Monacelli finished Monday strong as he moved into second place. He shot 300, 224, 196, 237, 278 and 195 going +230 on the day. He is followed by Michael Haugen Jr., Tom Hess and Tom Adcock to round out the top five. At the end of qualifying, there was a three-way tie for 24th place at +262 between Brad Angelo, Joe Ciach and Carleton Chambers. They bowled a one-game roll-off for the final spot, which was won by Chambers. He finished the game with eight straight strikes for 248 to defeat Ciach’s 247 and Angelo’s 205.

They will bowl two eight-game blocks of round-robin match play starting at 9 a.m. on Tuesday then again at 3 p.m. The final eight games will start at 9 a.m. on Wednesday to determine the top five for the stepladder finals scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. The finals for this event will be held inside the home of tournament sponsor Bill Moore. Watch the final two days of this major tournament only on BowlTV.
