Pete Weber Increases Day Two Lead in 2025 Senior U.S. Open
Greeley, Colorado – Pete Weber has continued to stay calm, cool and collected through two days of qualifying in the 2025 PBA50 Senior U.S. Open. The USBC and PBA Hall of Famer walked into Highland Park Lanes on Friday expecting a challenge but luckily, he got some valuable advice that paid off.
“I asked Don (Simonian) on the (PBA) truck if he had any ideas for this morning and he came up with two (balls) and I used both of them. This is the second time this year I have asked him for help, and he has come through,” Weber said. “I came in thinking today was supposed to be my tough squad, and I actually bowled really well. Tomorrow, I get the double burn, and I bowled good on the burn, so I feel like I am going to bowl really good.”
While bowling on the fresh 41-foot oil pattern, Weber started out using a different ball on each lane and played straighter than he did on Thursday. He rolled games of 269, 219, 258, 224, 238 and 210 for 1,418. Combine that with his Day 1 results and he is at 2,863, sitting at +463. He carried over his 60 clean frames from Thursday all the way until the 10th frame of Game 5. That’s 109 clean frames before a Big Four split.
“Two opens in 12 games, I will take it. I have been very happy with the way I am throwing the bowling ball,” he said. “My confidence level is getting higher and higher right now. I have got that win-mode in me again. I am going to win shortly.”
Sixty-eight pins behind Weber is Steve Kloempken, one of three players to shoot a perfect game on Friday. The right-hander bowled 201, 276, 195, 205, 300 and 268 for 1,445, the highest block of the tournament so far. Following him in third place is Greg Thomas at +367, Craig Auerbach at +343 and Stephen Krywy in fifth at +334. The other two perfect games were shot by left-handers Josh Hale and Dan Long.
The final six games of qualifying will get underway on Saturday with C-squad starting at 11 a.m. Eastern followed by A-squad at 2:30 p.m. ET and finally B-squad beginning at 6 p.m. ET. After the final squad is done, the top 24 players will advance to Sunday and Monday’s 24 games of round-robin match play. Currently, the cut line is at +195.
All pins will carry over and the top five bowlers will be in the stepladder finals scheduled to begin at 8:30 p.m. ET on Monday. The winner will earn a major title and $15,000. So don’t miss a minute of the action all on BowlTV.
