Andrew Anderson, Erin McCarthy Lead Day 1 of Luci
Half of qualifying is in the books in the 2025 Storm PBA/PWBA Striking Against Breast Cancer Mixed Doubles tournament.
Andrew Anderson and Erin McCarthy paced A- and B-squads on Friday at Copperfield Bowl, totaling 3,148 (+348) for their 14 combined games.
Anderson notched 1,550 for his seven games on the 41-foot oil pattern, while McCarthy shot a women’s-best 1,598. This is the duo’s second time bowling the Luci together; they finished fourth last year.
“Last year, we qualified second and we had high hopes for that Sunday,” Anderson said. “We just fell off a little bit. We didn’t bowl bad by any means, but with the best in the world on both the women's and men's side here, you're going to have to bowl really well the entire time. We're just looking forward to another chance on Sunday and hopefully ride the wave a little farther.”
Anderson said he and McCarthy’s friendship goes back about 11 years. He said they had the same sponsor, Harvey Johnson, early in their careers and they became fast friends.
“We just have fun,” McCarthy added. “We have a lot of good team chemistry. When we need to be serious, we can be serious. But when we need to have a good time, we have a good time.”
This year marks the event’s 25th anniversary. Since the first event in 2000, the X Out Breast Cancer Foundation has raised more than one million dollars in the fight against breast cancer.
“This is an event like no other in the world if you haven’t experienced it,” McCarthy said.
The teams of Sean Riccardi and Karsyn Lukosious, Justin Knowles and Maryssa Carey, Richie Teece and Liz Kuhlkin, and Cam Crowe and Sydney Bohn round out the top five after Friday’s competition.
Two-time defending champions Anthony Simonsen and Danielle McEwan (+116) are in ninth place overall.
The top 40 teams after Saturday’s two squads will advance to the semifinals on Sunday.
C-squad bowls at 8 a.m. Central/local time (9 a.m. Eastern) on Saturday, followed by D-squad at 2 p.m. (3 p.m. ET).
Across all rounds, players will bowl singles games with combined scores comprising the team total. There are no baker doubles games.
All rounds will be livestreamed on BowlTV.
More information on the event is available on the Striking Against Breast Cancer website and Facebook page.
