Pete McCordic Leads Day 1 of Qualifying at Super Senior Classic
Las Vegas, Nevada – After finishing his six-game qualifying block Thursday afternoon, Pete McCordic tried to remember if he had ever averaged over 250 for a block during his touring career. If he did, he sure doesn’t recall when it might have happened. The right-hander is savoring this moment after rolling games of 237, 269, 258, 225, 268 and 265 for 1,522, a 253.67 average, inside Sam’s Town Bowling Center at the 2024 Super Senior Classic.
“It was just one of those days where everything went right. I missed the pocket maybe three times out of six games,” he said. “I lived in the pocket and had reasonably good carry. It just was a fun, wonderful afternoon.”
After returning home to Katy, Texas, from the PBA50 Tour’s Florida swing, McCordic got some helpful advice from Donna Conners and Carol Norman, who own Carol “Stormin’” Norman’s Pro Shop in Houston. They noticed he was not getting his ball moving in his push away. He also tried to get more of a natural knee bend to use his legs more into his slide.
“I think that is why my carry was a little bit better, using my legs a little bit more kept me from rising up on shots,” he said. “For your timing to be right, you have got to get your push away and first step going right. Between those two things that is mainly what I keyed in on and when I did it right, it worked pretty well.”
Ironically sitting in second place is his twin brother, Paul McCordic who was the high bowler on B-squad with 1,469. Paul, who is left-handed, rolled the first 300 of the tournament in Game 4, while Glenn Smith closed out the day with a 300 game to climb into third place. Behind him is Craig Miller and Brad Snell to round out the top five.
The entire field, which consists of players 60 and older, will return on Friday for their final six games of qualifying beginning with the B Squad starting at noon Eastern and the A Squad at 5 p.m. ET. After qualifying ends the top 52 bowlers will advance to Saturday’s match play casher's round. You can see it all on BowlTV.
