Oklahoma City, Okla. – Houston’s Shawn Maldonado improved on his second place finish in last year’s PBA Oklahoma City Southwest Open capturing his 13th PBA Regional title in this year’s event.

Maldonado battled 2020 PBA Southwest Region Rookie of the Year Dimitri Cruz throughout the tournament, as they held onto first and second position after each round. Cruz held a 34-pin lead going into the final game position round, but could not hold off Maldonado, who won the deciding game 227-185.

Maldonado earned $2,700 for the victory, as Cruz collected $1,800 for second. Last year’s winner, high school junior Eric Jones, added $1,450 to his SMART scholarship fund finishing in third place.

The event also served as the PBA Regional Players Invitational (RPI) qualifier. Three players earned their invitation including, Cruz, Trey Ford III, and Ildemaro Ruiz Jr. The fourth qualifier is to be determined.

The Southwest Region returns to Diamond Lanes in Odessa, Texas, for the PBA Odessa Southwest Super Open on October 15-17 with a first-place prize of $5,000.
