"I was going to win or lose with the outside shot, throwing hard." So said Mal Acosta of his first championship round appearance in two years and so it was in his winning the $150,000 Lite Beer Open, breaking a four-year PBA victory drought. Acosta topped Amleto Monacelli of Venezuela, 235-195, for the $27,000 first prize at Buckeye Lanes, where Acosta also captured the 1981 Cleveland Open. For Monacelli, it was his fourth PBA runnerup finish and prolonged his televised finals frustration, leaving him without a title in 10 appearances. The televised finals began with Leroy Bornhop topping Indianapolis' Randy Stoughton, 244-190. Bornhop's momentum continued in rolling over Brian Voss, 256-234, before bowing to Acosta, 215-202. Any hopes for a "Mini-Slam" and accompanying $50,000 bonus for winning two of the three $1 million Lite Slam events sponsored by Miller Brewing were dashed earlier in the week. Neither David Ozio nor Don Genalo, winners at Miami, Fla., and Milwaukee, Wis., respectively, were able to complement their earlier 1986 Lite wins at Buckeye Lanes. Ozio finished match play as alternate (25th place) and Genalo ended in 34th place, good for $1,180.
