Leading qualifier Mike Aulby romped home with a 245-189 title win over Tom Baker to pick up a check for $27,000 in successfully defending his title in the $150,000 Brunswick Memorial World Open. In the opening match, Gary Skidmore and Pete Weber battled to the final pin with Skidmore notching a 247-246 win. Baker then swung into action and ousted Skidmore, 235-212, and he got the needed semifinal win from Steve Cook, 230-210. Baker got off to a great start in the championship game with Aulby. He opened with a double, then the roof caved in as he suffered three splits in the next four frames and suddenly he was trailing Aulby by 66 pins. Four closing strikes couldn't help Baker as Aulby coasted to his 12th PBA title and sixth of the year. Fifteen foreign players from eight countries earned entries into the World Open, and Karl Greulich, West Germany, managed a 27th-place finish to lead the overseas contingent.
