Although Bob Chamberlain won the $120,000 Hammer Open at Bertrand Bowling Lanes, Jim Pencak made his 1985 PBA national tour debut a most memorable one. Pencak won three matches before losing to Chamberlain, 245-215. Twice Pencak came from behind, first to upend Rick Sajek, 199-193, and then Wayne Webb, 224-210, on the strength of five closing strikes. He never trailed against Amleto Monacelli, however, coasting In with a 258-174 semifinal win. Chamberlain opened with a three-bagger, spared, and notched two more strikes to open a margin that ranged from nine to 20 pins midway rough the championship game. Pencak finished with 215, forcing Chamberlain to mark in the 10th frame, and the seasoned veteran buried three balls in the pocket for the victory.
