Mark Roth unburdened a longtime "monkey on his back" by winning the second jewel of professional bowling's "Triple Crown" in the $200,000 BPAA U.S. Open. Roth nipped Guppy Troup, 244-237, on the strength of four game-ending strikes to come from behind and snatch the largest first prize of his career, $38,000. Having been stymied in 10 previous appearances in "major" tournament (BPAA U.S. Open, PBA National Championship and Firestone Tournament of Champions) championship rounds, his 29th PBA triumph came in dramatic fashion. After Roth's closing heroics Troup still could have clinched his seventh PBA crown with a strike and nine count in the 10th, but the 4-pin remained upright on his first shot.
