Ted Hannahs took advantage of his strength and savvy to win the $150,000 True Value Open with three match-game victories, including a 211-160 championship game win over Leroy Bornhop. Hannahs, who had made better than $150,000 the previous two years without the benefit of a title, was in command all the way after top-seeded Bornhop suffered back-to-back splits to open the game. To get to the final game, Hannahs worked his way past Bob Handley, 226-223, and Steve Wunderlich, 216-212. The win paid $27,000 to the Zanesville, Ohio, right-hander whose only previous PBA title came in the 1981 Waukegan Open. As a consequence, Hannahs regained a spot in the Firestone Tournament of Champions.
