Wayne Webb started the new year the same way he finished 1983. . . a winner! The 26-year-old pin pro won the $140,000 Rolaids Open, the inaugural event on the 1984 PBA Tour, after finishing '83 with a victory in the $150,000 Brunswick Memorial World Open. Victim of Webb's triumph was top qualifier Bill Straub, who practically owns the Rolaids Open after winning it in 1982 and finishing fourth in the same event last year at St. Louis. In the opening match veteran Mike Durbin disposed of non-titlist Paul Gibson, 193-187. Webb then swung into action, finishing with seven straight strikes to oust Durbin, 238-200, and John Forst, 203-158. Webb notched strikes in three of his first five frames against Straub to take a lead he never relinquished and coasted, 224-178, for PBA title No. 13.
