The 25th anniversary year for the PBA got off to a rousing start when Gary Skidmore upset top-seeded Steve Cook in the finals of the $135,000 Miller High Life Classic. Skidmore totalled 234 to Cook's 180 to claim the top prize of $23,000. Both had to wait while two non-winners on the Tour, Dennis Jacques and Joe Staton, with a host of Anaheim hometowners cheering on Staton's every move, tangled In the opener. Jacques won, 166-133, and then upset current BPAA U.S. Open champion Dave Husted, 228-210. Skidmore eliminated Jacques, 205-183, in the semifinal match, setting up the championship match.
