Guppy Troup joined Earl Anthony and Art Trask for the lead in the 1982 titles category when he stopped Jeff Bellinger, 246-225, for his third victory of the season in the $90,000 Northern Ohio Open. Troup won the season-opening Miller High Life Classic in Anaheim, Calif., and later added the Molson Bowling Challenge crown on the Summer Tour. He was even more dominating in the annual Fall Tour Cleveland area event, averaging 222 while putting together a 19-4-1 match play record to pace the field by 240 pins, effectively playing an outside shot in contrast to the strategy of most of his opponents. In the title game Troup converted a 1-2-4-10 "washout" in the second frame before firing six straight strikes to insure the $11,000 top prize. Bellinger, making his fourth championship round appearance of the year, rolled 689 for three matches, defeating Jim Pencak and Steve Fehr before losing to Troup and being denied his first PBA victory.
