Gary Skidmore fired a title-winning, 10th-frame strike in defeating Mike Aulby, 218-204, to collect his first PBA championship in the $110,000 Aqua Fest/Mr. Gatti's Open in Austin, Texas. It was along climb for Skidmore, the fourth-seeded bowler competing in a national tour TV finals for the first time. The 28-year-old right-hander began by defeating veteran Gary Dickinson and newcomer Alan Granat before registering a brilliant 279 against No. 2-seed Dave Husted. In the final game Aulby, top-seeded by 198 pins, held a 16-pin advantage through six frames but could not put the match away. Skidmore rallied for a ninth-frame strike to set the stage for the dramatic final-frame pressure toss that earned him a berth in the Firestone Tournament of Champions and the $15,000 top prize.
