Guppy Troup, sidelined by a broken ankle throughout much of the 1981 season, got off to the best start possible in the new year by downing Wayne Webb, 243-212, in the $135,000 Miller High Life Classic in Anaheim, Calif. The 31-year-old Troup, who had made $23,160 in 20 tournaments in 1981, nearly equaled his previous season's earnings with the win while regaining the spot in the Firestone Tournament of Champions he had lost after failing to retain his Touring Pro I status. Troup outdistanced Marshall Holman by slightly over 100 pins for the top-seeded position before taking on Webb, who had rolled 696 while winning three matches, for the championship at Brunswick Wonderbowl.
