Earl Anthony captured the Long Island Open for the third straight year and fourth time in his career with a come from-behind, 230-224, victory over Gil Sliker in the $100,000 event at Garden City, N.Y. Anthony trailed by 28 pins going into the eighth frame but finished with five straight strikes to press Sliker into rolling a 10th frame double for his first championship. Sliker left a 7-pin on his first try, losing by six pins after having defeated Steve Martin and Wayne Webb earlier. Anthony's earnings for 1981 surpassed $100,000 with the $13,000 top prize and he tied his own record by winning a tournament three straight times. Anthony had won the PBA National Championship in 1973, 1974 and 1975 and prevailed in the Waukegan Open three straight years beginning in 1975.
