Mal Acosta prevailed over the tour's two leading money-winners in earning his first PBA championship in the $100,000 Cleveland Open. Acosta put together an 18-0 match play record, including seven wins in his last eight matches, to surpass Marshall Holman and Earl Anthony for the top-seeded position. He then routed Holman, 235-170, after making a radical line change to an outside angle early in the final game. Acosta earned $13,000 and a berth in the Firestone Tournament of Champions. Holman collected $7,500 for his second runnerup showing of the year while Anthony won $5,500 for third while seeing his TV winning streak snapped at eight.
