Marshall Holman nipped Richard Martinez, 209-203, for his first PBA title since 1979 in the $125,000 Quaker State Open in Grand Prairie, Texas. Holman, coming back strong from a suspension that blighted his 1980 season, converted spares in the last four frames to hold off Martinez for the $20,000 first prize. "It wasn't easy, I'm not known as King of Spares out here," said an elated Holman who had won a three-way battle for the top-seeded position against Martinez and Mark Roth. Holman had won the Quaker State Open in 1979 and was runnerup to Roth in 1978.
