Wayne Webb became the PBA's leading title winner for 1980 when he escaped with his third PBA crown of the year in the Kessler Classic in Indianapolis. The 23-year-old Webb who won the Showboat Invitational and the Firestone Tournament of Champions earlier in the season, finished with 193 and watched as Jim Winklepleck, needing one strike in the 10th frame to win, left a wobbling 2-pin, and settled for his second runnerup finish of the year. The victory gave Webb, who had surpassed the $100,000 mark in the previous week's Kessler event, a cushion of more than $15,000 over Mark Roth who finished fifth at Astro Bowl. Winklepleck rolled the tournament's only 300 game in the position round match to qualify for the stepladder finals where he advanced past Boysie Huber and Ed Ressler to get to the title game.
