After what seemed like an endless wait, Mark Roth finally captured his first PBA crown of the year in the Brunswick Regional Champions Classic in Rochester, N.Y. Roth topped Ed Ressler, 217-210, in the championship game after he had led the field by 320 pins despite winning just 10 of 24 games in match play: Roth overcame the lack of bonus pins by averaging more than 10 pins per game more than any other competitor. It was the second title in three years for Roth at Brunswick Olympic Lanes and his 23rd overall. The 1979 PBA Player of the Year finished second five times on the 1980 tour but with the win pulled within $5,300 of the season's leading money winner Wayne Webb with the $7,000 first prize. In the finals, dominated by Eastern PBA Regional champs, Gil Sliker placed third, Don Sylvia fourth and former touring pro Gus Lampo fifth.
