Steve Martin claimed his second PBA title of the year in the Southern California Open when opponent Jim Winklepleck, needing a strike in the 10th frame to win, left the 2-4-5 pins standing. Winklepleck, a second-year pro shooting for his initial PBA title, came from fifth place during the ESPN-TV finals, bowling past Mark Roth, Tom Baker and local favorite Larry Gray, but came up short by three pins in the final match, bowing 196-193. For Martin, who had earlier in the year captured the BPAA U.S. Open, the win was his second of the season and worth $9,000 at Gable House Lanes in Torrance. The $5,000 runnerup check boosted Winklepleck's earnings for 27 career tournaments to over $28,000.
