After waiting 12 years and more than 300 tournaments before winning his first title, Ernie Schlegel proudly pointed to a winning ratio of two for five after he captured the $85,000 City of Roses Open. Schlegel, from nearby Vancouver, U.S.A., knocked off George "The General" Pappas, 181-179, in a tense, hotly contested final game which was not decided until Schlegel struck on his final shot, needing nine pins to win. Prior to that, Schlegel had stopped an ambitious challenge from amateur Rick Vittone who had convincingly bowled past Steve Martin and Mark Roth until bowing to the eventual champ in the semifinal contest. Schlegel had earlier won the King Louie Open on the Winter Tour.
