Joe Berardi upset top-seeded Earl Anthony, 232-195, to claim his fast PBA title and the $21,000 first prize in the BPAA U.S. Open at Bradley Bowl in Windsor Locks, Conn. Berardi, 24, trailed Anthony most of the week, as Anthony, trying for his second straight victory, routed the field by 578 pins after 56 games going into the finals. Qualifying second, Berardi first took on hometown favorite Pete Couture, who by losing, 213-199, found himself knocked out of the Firestone Tournament of Champions one game later when Berardi, starting with a spare and six strikes, registered the victory over Anthony.
