Mark Roth struck out in the 10th frame of the final game to defeat Joe Berardi, 209-198, for the $9,000 first prize in the $75,000 King Louie Open, making it Roth's second straight championship and third in five weeks on the 1978 Winter tour. Roth trailed Berardi for nine frames before tossing three pressure-packed strikes in the final frame to put the pressure squarely on Berardi's shoulders. Berardi was unable to come up with the needed double, and the title belonged to Roth, his 11th in an eight-year career and his second at King Louie. Berardi, seeded fifth for the TV finals, bowled erratically, but defeated Tommy Hudson, 190-182, Jeff Mattingly, 231-154, and Steve Martin, 203-202, to reach the championship match.
