For the second time in as many weeks the Professional Bowlers Association had a new champion. Tommy Hudson, Akron, Ohio, 1972's Sporting News PBA Rookie of the Year, won the $4000 Houston-Sertoma Open at Stadium Bowl, defeating Bill Beach, Sharon, Pa. 203-192. Hudson joined the our in 1972, and has been cashing regularly since, but didn't come close to the winner's circle until last winter when he finished fifth in the $100,000 Winston-Salem Classic. In Tucson, Ariz., just a week ago, he led the field for a time but faded to ninth, then finally put it all together in Houston. The championship game between Hudson and Beach was a thriller, with only a few pins separating them throughout. In the 10th frame Hudson had a chance to shut Beach out with a strike, but he spared and finished with the 203, giving Beach the opportunity to tie if the Pennsylvanian could strike out. Beach got the first strike, but left a three-pin on the second ball, and his 192 fell short.
