Ritger Has Midas Touch

Dick Ritger, Hartford, Wis., and Jim Stefanich, Joliet, Ill., combined their bowling talents as the $100,000 Midas Open in Alameda, Calif., launched the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) 1974 tournament tour in startling fashion.

Ritger won the tournament's $14,000 first prize with a 247-227 triumph over veteran Bob Strampe, Detroit, in the championship game, while Stefanich electrified a huge national television audience by rolling a 300 game during his three-game 800 total, in an effort to win the title.

That trio, along with Glenn Carlson, Fresno, Calif., and Earl Anthony, Tacoma, Wash., also combined to give millions of fans the highest televised scoring finale ever as the five finalists averaged 249 for eight games.
