Allie Clarke, Akron, Ohio, launched the Professional Bowlers Association 1973 winter tour in startling fashion when he toppled four opponents to win the $65,000 San Jose Open. Clarke's victim in the championship game was a fellow Akronite, top-seeded Don Johnson, whom Clarke victimized, 203-201, to win the $7,500 first prize. Clarke's march to victory was a masterful display of outstanding and clutch bowling. He barely got the fifth spot in the finals by striking in the ninth and tenth frames late in match play, to grab the fifth spot from Glenn Carlson, Fresno, Cal. Johnson, meanwhile, had started match game play in 24th place, and, aided by a 300 game, doggedly worked his way into the top spot by finally edging Don Glover, South Bend, Ind., 215-182, in the position round game, while Clarke was performing his heroics several pairs of lanes away. Clarke first disposed of Johnny Petraglia, Brooklyn, N.Y., 238-223. Next up was Gus Lampo, Endicott, N.Y., who won at Saratoga Lanes in 1972. Lampo gave Clarke a tussle all the way to the end, but a split in the sixth frame proved his undoing, and Clarke, who saw Petraglia convert a 6-7-10 in the first game, came up with a 5-7 against Lampo, and won that one, 236-225.
