Perfect Landing For Anthony
Earl Anthony, emerged from a taut duel with Don McCune to win the $50,000 American Airlines Open at Western Bowl. A 300 game in the next to the last game of the tournament, sandwiched in a string of 23 strikes, clinched the victory for Anthony, who had been dueling with McCune since the first block of the tournament.
Going into the final eight games of match play, Anthony held a 46-pin margin over McCune, but Anthony lost his first two games and watched McCune gain the lead. He finally notched a 234, finishing with six strikes then strung together 12 more strikes for the 300 game. He opened his next to the last game with seven more strikes for a 238-217 win over McCune in the position round championship game.
The victory was his third of the year. He won two in a row in the summer, at Portland, Ore., and a week later at Redwood City, Calif.
Anthony and McCune spread-eagled the star-studded field. Jimmy McHugh, New York, N.Y., was third, 337 pins behind McCune, who trailed Anthony, 10,382 actual and bonus pins, to McCune's 10,291. Anthony averaged 236 for the 42 games.
Two other 300 games spiced the action. Bob Hood, San Francisco, Cal., and Chet Dziedzina, Chicago, Ill., both connected on the perfectos, and they held the spotlight until Anthony and McCune locked in their nose-to-nose battle. McCune, who was second in the American Airlines Open here a year ago, won 14 of his last 15 games in an effort to nail Anthony.
