Nelson Burton Jr. nearly lost what looked like an insurmountable lead in the closing stages but hung on for a position round victory over Wayne Zahn, Tempe, Ariz., to win the $42,000 Waukegan Open at Bertrand Lanes. The victory was the third of the year for Burton who previously won the Ebonite Open at Miami, Fla. and the Miller High Life Open at Milwaukee. Burton had to win the position-round championship game from Zahn to clinch the title. Earlier he had taken over the lead from qualifying leader Allie Clarke, Akron, Ohio, half way through match game finals play, and at one time had built his lead to more than 200 pins over his closest rival. However, Burton came a-cropper midway through the final eight games of match play, losing four straight while Zahn narrowed the gap to only 45 pins. In the final game, the two pros were virtually even until Zahn left a disastrous 4-6 split in the eighth frame, while Burton was rallying to finish with five strikes and a 243-225 win. Jim Stefanich gave the Bertrand crowds a thrill when he notched a 300 game during qualifying play and it helped him to a fourth-place finish. | | | Name, City/State | | Pins | | WLT | | + | | Tot | | Amt | | | 1 | | Nelson Burton Jr., St. Louis, Mo. | | 9071 | | 17-7-0 | | 510 | | 9581 | | $4,000 | | 2 | | Wayne Zahn, Tempe, Ariz. | | 9038 | | 15-9-0 | | 450 | | 9488 | | 2,200 | | 3 | | Dick Ritger, Hartford, Wisc. | | 8839 | | 18-6-0 | | 540 | | 9379 | | 1,500 | | #4 | | Jim Stefanich, Joliet, Ill. | | 8876 | | 14-9-1 | | 435 | | 9311 | | 1,200 | | 5 | | Jim McHugh, New York, N.Y. | | 8891 | | 13-10-1 | | 405 | | 9296 | | 1,100 | | 6 | | Tye Critchlow, Los Angeles, Cal. | | 8815 | | 16-8-0 | | 480 | | 9295 | | 1,050 | | 7 | | Allie Clarke, Akron, Ohio | | 8902 | | 12-12-0 | | 360 | | 9262 | | 1,000 | | 8 | | Dick Ciprich, Buffalo, N.Y. | | 8814 | | 13-11-0 | | 390 | | 9204 | | 950 | | 9 | | Marty Piraino, Syracuse, N.Y. | | 8716 | | 15-9-0 | | 450 | | 9166 | | 900 | | 10 | | Jack Getzen, Lansing, Mich. | | 8756 | | 13-11-0 | | 390 | | 9146 | | 850 | | 11 | | Dick Weber, St. Louis, Mo. | | 8779 | | 12-12-0 | | 360 | | 9139 | | 825 | | 12 | | Les Zikes, Chicago, Ill. | | 8727 | | 13-11-0 | | 390 | | 9117 | | 800 | | 13 | | Skee Foremsky, Houston, Texas | | 8734 | | 11-13-0 | | 330 | | 9064 | | 775 | | 14 | | Ron McCaull, Maiden, Mass. | | 8700 | | 10-14-0 | | 300 | | 9000 | | 750 | | 15 | | Larry Lichstein, Windsor Locks, Conn. | | 8647 | | 11-12-1 | | 345 | | 8992 | | 725 | | @16 | | Steve Werenski, Waukegan, Ill. | | 8591 | | 12-11-1 | | 375 | | 8966 | | 700 | | 17 | | Don McCune, Munster, Ind. | | 8683 | | 9-15-0 | | 270 | | 8953 | | 675 | | 18 | | Curt Schmidt, Ft.
