Burton Caught By Curt

Nelson Burton's bid for a second straight championship died a-burning in the Buckeye Open when Curt Schmidt, a coolnerved performer from Ft. Wayne, Ind., came up with a clutch double in the tenth frame to win the game and title, 255-248.

The winner's seven-pin margin climaxed one of the PBA's most thrilling finishes ever. Just prior to his nerve-tingling showing, Schmidt watched as Burton, a winner one week before in Miami, poured through eight strikes in a row to come from behind and put the pressure on Curt. The little Indianan, however, who had swept through three straight foes, was not to be denied in his bid for the $7,000 purse.
