Already the winner of two tournaments during 1970, Nelson Burton Jr. served notice early in the EI Paso Open that he intended to make it number three as the PBA tour hit the colorful border city. The pro from St. Louis wrestled the tournament lead from Ed Bourdase after 12 games, surrendered it for one block to Tim Harahan, then came on once again to finally score by 288 pins over Johnny Petraglia. After the opening block of the match game finals, Bo was 169 pins in front of Dave Soutar, who was to wind up third. Then, after his 6-3 showing, Burton took four of seven, showing his heels to most everyone else, except for Petraglia who managed to stay reasonably close. In knocking down 9,133 pins, Burton averaged 227. His 11-5 record in the 16-game finals was matched only by Soutar, who finished ahead of Harahan and Butch Gearhart, fourth and fifth respectively.
