Cougar Open

$75,000 COUGAR OPEN
Coliseum Lanes, Coral Gables, Fla., Mar 17-21, 1970

McGrath Drives To Win

Mike McGrath didn't fail when he received his second chance at winning the Cougar Open. Second one year ago, when he came up with a subpar 149 in a losing effort to Ralph Engan, this time around the gritty lefthander was equal to the task. Four straight strikes from the seventh through the tenth frames were the impetus Mike needed to put down the threat posed by Dave Davis, who turned in the event's only 300 game. As a matter of record, McGrath and Davis outdistanced the field in the qualifier for the $10,000 winner's share in the $75,000 tournament.

Scoring generally was low in .the preliminaries and that was the case, too, in the finals. Alex Seymore tore through Bob Strampe (216-194) in the opener and then whipped Dick Battista in a low-scoring match, 164-151. Then, it was Davis over the challanger, 204-176, before the windup at Coliseum Lanes.

In addition to the winner's check, McGrath also received a new Cougar automobile, courtesy of the sponsoring Lincoln-Mercury firm.
