Carmen Salvino, of Chicago, scored a 232-169 victory over split-ridden Wayne Zahn in capturing the $40,000 Mobile Sertoma Open in Mobile's spacious Municipal Auditorium. With some 4,000 fans in attendance, the largest crowd ever to watch a bowling finals, Salvino, who had led the 40-game qualifier, was seeded into the title match. The Chicagoan then watched as Les Schissler defeated Butch Gearhart, 216-199, then Skee Foremsky, 216-170. Zahn racked up Schissler, 226-163, to set the stage for the big one. It was Salvino's second victory of the year and eighth overall.
