A new champion, a new world's record and two 300 games made the Labor Day Classic in Dallas, Tex. a memorable tournament. Sam Baca celebrated a new-born son (five days before the tournament started) by scoring a 10-pin verdict over Nelson Burton Jr. Burton got into the act by rolling a 300 game on his way to setting an unsanctioned world mark of 1539 for a six-game block. Jerry McCoy was the other 300 shooter. Baca's 9515 total for the 40 games included 550 bonus pins for an 11-5 record in the match game finals. Burton knocked down the most pins (9055 actual) but won only nine games in the finals.
