Ray Rides At Baltimore
Lewis Ray of Fort Worth, Tex. won 14 of his 16 match games in the finals to win the $20,400 Johnny Unitas Baltimore Open by 112 pins. This was Ray's first PBA tournament victory. The Baltimore test was the first in which the PBA used its new scoring system. The pins from the 24-game qualifier were carried over into the 16-game finals and each victory in the finals was worth 50 pins. Ray qualified in the 13th spot and then proceeded to "tear foes up" by winning nine straight matches in the finals, before losing two and then going the rest of the way. Baltimore's Harry Smith finished in the runnerup hole, Ray Bluth of St. Louis was third and Bill Bunetta of Fresno, Calif. was fourth. Highlights of the finals was the match between Smith and Bluth. Smith spared in the first frame and then strung 11 straight strikes to win, 289-279. Bluth spared in his first two tries and then struck out. 40 GAMES
