As he filled the final frames in his title match against Bob Learn Jr., the tears started to well up in Norm Duke's eyes. The game, a 279-203 score, was over early at Classic Bowl in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. But, the realization that Duke had ended nearly two years of frustration and self-doubt was just beginning. "Those were real tears," he told an ABC Sports television audience as he collected the trophy and $40,000 winner's share of the IOF Foresters Open in the suburban Toronto city. Duke also earned a spot in the Showboat "King of the Hill" match against Walter Ray Williams Jr., at the Harrisburg Open. "When you go some time without winning after you've been used to winning, it's tough. It plays with your head," Duke said. As if on "cruise control" Duke nonchalantly dismissed Canadian challenger Marc Do!, 277-205, for another $10,000 in a unique winner-take-all finale to the event. The challenge match was deadlocked atter three frames as each player opened with a double and spare. However, Duke went on to string eight more strikes, overshadowing an error-less 205 by Doi. The title game against top-seeded Learn of Erie, Pa., was similarly anti-climatic.
