Ozio Win Amf; Breaks 11-Year-Old Scoring Record
David Ozio thrilled the 2,000-plus fans at the Arthur Ashe Center, Richmond, Va., capturing his 11th PBA title at the $250,000 AMF Dick Weber Classic. Ozio broke an 11-year-old scoring record en route to the $60,000 top prize. The PBA Hall of Famer totaled 1,070 pins (2675 avg.) and posted four wins in the unique round-robin format. He broke Nelson Burton Jr.'s record of 1,050 pins set in 1984 in St. Louis, Mo. Ozio also earned a $5,000 bonus from AMF for qualifying in the No. 1 spot. He then donated $5,000 to Children's Miracle Network, PBA's official charity. Ozio, Vidor, Texas, defeated another PBA Hall of Famer, Walter Ray Williams Jr., in the title match, 280-238. It was the first time since 1982 that two PBA Hall of Famers met in a title match. Earl Anthony defeated Dave Soutar in the title match of the '82 ARC Alameda (Calif.)The four finalists bowled each other once and the top two scorers advanced to the title match. Each player was awarded 30 bonus pins for a win and 15 for a tie. "I love this format," said Ozio. "This is what bowling's supposed to be like. I wish every week was like this. Richmond's a great bowling town and AMF treated us so well this week. They deserved a finals like we had." Ozio advanced to the title match after downing Williams, 287-279, in the first round. In the second match Ozio defeated Doug Kent of Canandaigua, N.Y., 268-234. Norm Duke of Edmond, Okla., was Ozio's third victim in the third round as he bested Duke, 235-198. Williams' path to the title match wasn't as easy as Ozio's. In fact, his lone win came against Duke in the second round, 267-245. Williams was bowling in his second consecutive title match in as many weeks. He captured the Rochester Open one week earlier but was a little shaken in this week's title game. Williams pocketed $31,000 for second place. He was trying to become the first player to win back-to-back titles since Dave D'Entremont won in Sunrise, Fla., and Peoria, Ill., earlier this year. Kent, who won $21,000 for third, was seeking his first win in his seventh television appearance. Duke, second-seeded going Into the final, took home $16,000 for fourth. CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND
