Bob Spaulding outlasted Kelly Coffman, 231-183, in a battle of two PBA heavyweights seeking their first titles, as Spaulding emerged with the Quaker Stale 250 crown in Grand Prairie Texas. Spaulding, Greenville S.C., pocketed the $48,000 first prize at host Forum Bowling Lanes, along with an invitation to the Brunswick World Tournament of Champions. Top-seeded Spaulding forced Coffman to start the championship game on his unfavorable left lane, where he opened by missing the 3-4-6-7-9-10 split and then failed to convert the 3-6-9-10 leave in his second frame. Spaulding spared, doubled, and never relinquished the lead, closing with a five-bagger and nine, to guarantee Coffman, Topeka, Kan., the $25,000 second-place check. Spaulding said, "It was very special having my fiancee here. This was the result of four years' work. I was pretty positive I'd win sooner or later, but glad it came sooner." In the first game of the 19th annual Quaker State-sponsored event, two-time PBA Player of the Year Amleto Monacelli topped four-time 1994 champion Bryan Goebel, Merriam, Kan., 244-202. Coffman then came in, and an open 10th frame sidelined Venezuela's Monacelli, 218-214. Dave D'Entremont of Middleburg Heights, Ohio, was up next, but fared no better against Coffman, falling, 185-175. D'Entremont earned $15,000 for third place, Monacelli made $10,000 for fourth and Goebel $8,500.
