Monacelli Marches To 15th PBA Title
Once the dust had settled at the Greater Lexington Classic everything remained the same. Leading qualifier Amleto Monacelli, Venezuela, returned to the winner's circle for his 15th PBA title and the other four finalists retained their qualifying positions at Collins Bowling-Eastland. Monacelli turned back Atlanta's Brian Voss, 257-193, for the $16,000 first prize he earned on two different lane pairs following a mechanical breakdown on the championship pair. The ESPN telecast began with Bob Vespi appearing in his fifth consecutive televised game following his runnerup finish the week earlier at Harrisburg, Pa. Vespi, Coral Springs, Fla., then topped Del Ballard Jr. of Richardson, Texas, 195-161, before falling to Bob Spaulding of Harrisburg, Pa., 202-t79. As Voss took the lanes, the right-hand lane broke down in practice and play was moved to the alternate lanes, 16 and 17. In the semifinal, Voss opened with an eight-bagger and rolled over Spaulding, 252-188,.en route to his $8,500 second-place check. Spaulding collected $5,000 for third place, Vespi $4,000 for fourth and -Ballard $3,000. Voss said, "It was pretty scary when lane 18 broke down, but there was no way I would've shot 260 on that other pair. I had the first seven strikes before and had shot 300 against Spaulding In match play, so once 1 struck In the eighth, I thought I'd shoot 300." Monacelli had missed most of the Summer Tour schedule due to visa complications and he thanked Brunswick for helping him cut through the red tape with the Venezuelan embassy by obtaining an extended visa. This was just his second tournament of the nine-week summer lineup. CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND
