Third-seeded Norm Duke denied Waiter Ray Williams Jr. the opportunity to claim two PBA records when he won the $140,000 Greater Detroit Open at Taylor Lanes. Duke, Oklahoma City, overwhelmed Williams, Stockton, Calif., 247-179, for the $23,000 first prize and his fourth PBA title. Williams gave an indication of things to come in the title game when he opened in his first frame, but Duke immediately gave back his edge by opening in the second frame. Williams doubled and then opened again in his fourth frame, but Duke started a seven-bagger and had clinched in the eighth frame. Williams was saddled with his 7th career finish as runner-up and pocketed $12,000 for a fourth second-place finish of his soon to be record-setting year. The ESPN championship round began with Steve Jaros defeating Mike Shady of Ripon, Wis., 279-245. Duke entered and opened with the first nine strikes in felling Jaros Bolingbrook, III., 279-236. In the semifinal game Duke ousted Ryan Shafer, Elmira, N.Y., 238-211. Shafer earned $7,500 for third place, Jaros collected $6,000 for fourth and Shady $5,000.
