Walter Ray Williams Jr. became the first back-to-back champion on the PBA Tour since Del Ballard Jr. in 1991 when he captured the $137,500 PBA Oregon Open at Hollywood Bowl. Williams, Stockton, Calif., defeated leading qualifier Brian Voss, 224-217, for the $23,000 first prize and his fourth title of 1993. In the final "King of the Hill" match of the year, Randy Pedersen, Hollywood, Fla., collected a $10,000 bonus ($15,000 total) for a third consecutive win as "King" when he bested Williams, 216-199. In the championship game, Williams opened with a strike, spare and double to trail Voss by 12 pins through six frames. However, coming into the home stretch, Williams proved equal to the task for a second consecutive week with two "must" strikes in the 10th frame to win. Voss, Boca Raton, Fla., finishing first, could have shut Williams out, but left a costly 9-pin on his first shot in the 10th frame. He earned $12,000 as runner-up. In the first game of the ABC Sports telecast, Bob Benoit defeated Norm Duke of Oklahoma City, 234-227, after Duke qualified for the TV finals for a third consecutive year at Hollywood Bowl. Williams then defeated Benoit, Topeka, Kan., 258-213, before facing Voss. Benoit made $6,000 for third place and Duke collected $5,000.
