Steve Fields of Stockton, Calif., powered to his first PBA championship with the enthusiasm of his boyish appearance at Skyway Park Bowl. Fields turned back fourth-seeded Bill Oakes of Lawton, Okla., 279-269, to win the $132,500 Seattle Open in his impressive television debut, which netted him the $21,000 first prize plus a berth into the $325,000 General Tire Tournament of Champions next year. Randy Pedersen of Hollywood, Fla., retained his "King of the Hill" status via a 279-227 conquest of Fields in the afternoon's final match, to pocket the $5,000 winner-take-all stakes for a second consecutive tournament. He opened with eight strikes before sparing in the ninth frame to spoil his 300 game bid. Pedersen can claim a $10,000 bonus ($15,000 total) should he win a third consecutive challenge in the final "King of the Hill" match of 1993-at the PBA Oregon Open June 26. In the championship game, 24-year-old, 5-foot-4 Fields opened with a spare, nine-bagger, spare for his 279. Meanwhile, eight-year tour veteran Oakes also spared just twice, in the opening and sixth frames, yet had to settle for the $11,000 runnerup check. In the first game of the ABC Sports' telecast, Oakes downed Curtis Odom, Winston-Salem, N.C., 259-169, and then another non-winner, Ed Richardson of Corpus Christi, Texas, 238-205. Richardson earned $7,500 for third place and Odom collected $6,000.
