Parker Bohn III, came and conquered as the dominant tournament leader with a 258-235 victory over second-seeded Tsuguo Tsukahara to win the Oronamin C Japan Cup at Tokyo Port Bowl. Bohn, Freehold, N.J., collected the $18,500 first prize and his eighth PBA title in this eighth annual international competition. Bohn opened his game with a turkey, spare and five-bagger to take control as he had this entire tournament, in which he amassed a lead of more than 400 pins. The live NHK televised championship round (estimated viewing audience of 38 million) began with Masanori Saitoh, Kanagawa, defeating PBA President Marc McDowell, Madison, Wis., 268-217. Bryan Goebel, Merriam, Kan., entered and defeated Saitoh, 237-226, and was nearly perfect in ousting third-seeded Masaaki Saijoh of Tokyo, 299-268. Had Goebel tossed a 300 game, sponsoring Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co., would have awarded him a bonus of $50,000. That game also equaled PBA's highest championship round game of 1970 when Don Johnson defeated Dick Ritger in the Firestone Tournament of Champions by that exact score. In the semifinal game, Tsukahara defeated Goebel, 223-204, to earn his berth opposite Bohn, the only lefthander among the 32 competitors. Tsukahara earned $12,600 as runnerup, Goebel collected $8,800 for third place, Saijoh $7,450 for fourth, Saitoh $6,000 and McDowell $5,250 for sixth place.
